Hank Moody- a self loathing, narcissistic author struggles to overcome writer's block while balancing his occasional drug use, alcoholism, and borderline sex addiction all the while trying to get back together with his girlfriend and raise his teenage daughter.
I LOVE this show! It is SO well written, I am in love with whoever wrote this stuff! As a one hit wonder book writer myself, I find myself relating so well to Hank's character (except that I'm a woman, not a womanizer!) David Duchovny's Hank captures the essence of the struggling L.A. artist so perfectly as he tries in vain to win back the woman he never married, maintain a relationship with the only woman who understands him; his teenage daughter while continually stuffing up in almost every other aspect of his life. There are some incredibly naughty and downright raunchy scenes and all the ingredients for a successful series; plenty of gratuitous sex scenes, drug use and references, and nudity and debauchery abounds. But it's the way life really is in this scene and it's real and gritty and somehow tasteful while being completely in-your-face confronting at the same time. You feel for Hank the way you feel every time you've ever wanted anything in your life that never quite turned out the way you planned. Only two more episodes to the final and that little 16 year old minx potential step-daughter-in-law cum ex-one-night stand Mia is up to no good and trying to pass off Hanks long-awaited second novel as her own... I'm on Hanks' team... Go Hank Go!

off to California again
10/10
It deserves its top score and then some. I am collecting the box sets, and I've got the first five, and tonight I'm watching Saturday evening treat's Season 3 finale. The series ranks under my Top Choices as Best TV Show, and, indeed, film in general. It's better than almost any movie. I suppose people stay at home to watch this one if they don't have TiVo. I live in South Africa, and DVD is my pleasure of choice. And if you're thinking of adding this to your collection, do! The stories are cringe-worthy if you're watching this with family members, I suppose, so be aware that this is Adult Entertainment, not as a euphemism for pornography, but truly what entertainment for adults should be like. Something to sink your teeth into, and I'm not talking about Natascha McElhone, loads and loads of eye candy, and, yes, this includes Natascha McElhone, although she is the only regular actress on the show that is excused from having to appear in the compromising scenes, of which there are many. If ever there was a film character that makes a good impression, it is Karen, and Natascha will be remembered for this forever. Karen and Hank are so clearly made for each other, they click so resoundingly, that it is ten times more excruciating to see them going in opposite directions.

Intellectually Gratifying!!
10/10
It all started with Duchovy getting a bl****** from a hot blonde. I must confess that all the sex scenes are handled very intelligently and sometimes with loads of humor esp. the one in which hez seen getting punched a young woman. Then out of nowhere you realize that hez a guy who has a family which has broken because of his philandering. I like the way the daughter and father relationship is shown. They are shown to be frens. Duchovy is shown as a person who is hell bent on ruining his life but that;s one side of him..his reaction to his wife leaving him. He so very loves her that everything seems to be secondary in front of the agony of separation and seeing her getting married to another person. Everything seems so real that i could not point out a single thing that would not/could not happen with a ordinary person like me. It is so close to reality. Everyone is shown with their grey sides. Everyone is weak or more human than any other series on the block. Being from India this is was a great cultural experience for me coz i got some real insight of the society people live in. This was completely different from the ones portrayed by the movies and hell lot of other soap operas. This show has everything from entertainment to real serious philosophies. It never questions you anything but it gets you to a corner and leave you with no choice but to ponder upon the intricacies of life. Life is complex...this series doesnot make it a bit simple yet it very simply and subtly portrays the complexity on the screen. I am eagerly waiting for the 2nd season and see how the protagonist is able to cope up with the marital bliss that he is blessed with for a 2nd time.
